Shipping Interest - Three silver Elder Dempster Lines onboard souvenir pieces

Shipping Interest - Three silver Elder Dempster Lines onboard souvenir pieces comprising; cigarette case with enamelled house flag engraved 'Souvenir of voyage RMS Alosso', Sheffield, 1906, two napkin rings both enamel house flags, one engraved to 'M/V Accra, August 1926', Sheffield, 1925, the other ' RMS Apapa', Sheffield, 1915, 191.5g gross approx, all having sponsors marks for Walker & Hall, together with an EPNS match holder to the 'TMS ACCRA', a small number of postcards, and eleven 1929 restaurant menus

The vendor's grandfather was employed as an 'Agent in the Gold Coast Colony' by Cadbury Brothers Ltd of Bournville, Birmingham, who purchased the souvenirs on numerous voyages.

Elder Dempster Lines was a UK shipping company that traded from 1932-2000, but had its origins in the mid 19th Century. Its predecessor was the African Steamship Co. Ltd.

Part of the fleet were:

  • Accra - Built in 1926 by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. On the 26th April 1940 en route from Liverpool to West Africa it was torpedoed and sunk.
  • Apapa - Built in 1927 by Harland and Wolff, Belfast and was the sister ship of Accra
  • Abosso - Built in 1912 by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. On the 24th April 1917 on route from Lagos to Liverpool it was torpedoed and sunk.
