Magnificent pair of French flintlock presentation pistols made for the Turkish market. These are late 19th Century guns made to show off the gun-makers art and were probably never used, likely to be a display piece. Both with fine Damascus barrels, going from octagonal to round, sighted with small blued tip-up rear sight and silver fore, the barrels are blued and have raised silver decoration, on the flat is an Arabic inscription in gold. The border engraved locks are engraved with stand of arms and have sliding safeties, the top jaw is vividly blued as are the foliate engraved tangs.
The full stocks are elaborately inlaid with silver floral patterns which extend behind the tang to military motifs and to the swollen butts in an extravagant cornucopia-like design. The butt caps are terminated by ormolu lion head masks, the trigger guard side plates, and ram-rod pipes also brass/ormolu. The pistols lack the ramrods.
The case is of rosewood with a deep blue lining, the accessories being two-piece cleaning rods with brass tips and loose mallet heads, red leather-covered powder flasks, blued steel wad-cutters, blued steel bullet moulds numbers 'Z6', turn-screws and a leather bag of lead balls,. The case is of mahogany with brass lineal decoration and a sunken carrying handle. The barrels are 32cm long, guns are 48cms overall (bore diameter 65cm). The case is 58cm x 24cm x 8cm
