Sergeant Hawkins has completed 28 successful sorties as gunner. He has been to Berlin three times, Essen four and has also been to all the heavily defended bomber objectives in the Ruhr and to Milan and Spezia in Italy. On all occasions, he has shown courage and resourcefulness and twice has helped his pilot to evade enemy fighters by his cool and lucid commentary. For his coolness and courage in the face of fire throughout long operations, he is recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.
