Local interest - Unusual mahogany miniature bracket timepiece by Thomas Pierce, Bristol, mid 18th Century, the eight-day single fusee movement with anchor escapement, shaped plates and passing strike on a single bell, the 4 inch wide silvered brass break-arch dial engraved ‘THOMAS PIERCE, BRISTO’ to arch over adjustable watch-hanging hook and offset subsidiary minutes dial opposing recessed sector for jump hours, in a case with pierced swan neck pediment over glazed front door and bracket feet, 35cm high

The present lot is illustrated in Moore, A.J. ‘The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650-1900’ p. 313, where it is suggested that it may have been used for the timing and regulating of watches. Thomas Pierce (II) is noted by Moore as working from 48 Wine Street, Bristol 1739-45 then from 57 Corn Street by 1761.
