English School, late 18th century - Oil on panel - Half-length portrait of George Brudenell, 4th Earl of Cardigan, with tied hair, red jacket and blue sash, 24cm x 19cm, in pierced swept gilt frame, with typewritten label verso:
"George Brudenell 4th Earl of Cardigan. Born 1712 died 23rd May 1790. Married Lady Mary Montagu 3rd daughter and co. heir of John 2nd Duke of Montagu and last of that creation. Upon the death of his father in law in 1749 George Brudenell assumed the surname and arms of Montagu. On 28th Oct. 1776 he was advanced to a Marquessate and Dukedom, as Marquis of Monthermer and Duke of Montagu. He was installed a knight of the Garter 4th June 1752, sworn of the privy council in 1776, and appointed governor to their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Prince Frederick. He was created 21st Aug. 1786, Baron Montagu of Boughton. His mother in law was Mary Churchill, youngest daughter of John Duke of Marlborough"
