Clevedon Salerooms most recent Interiors auction on Thursday October 3rd at the Kenn Road Auction Centre.
Over seven hundred lots were on offer with an eclectic selection across all categories but it was amongst ceramics that the day’s highest price was found; a group of Beswick greyhounds. Beswick is perhaps best known for its realistic porcelain models of cattle, long beloved of the farming community, the factory produced a menagerie of creatures designed to appeal to British market. Greyhounds featured strongly in their repertoire but the majority sell for modest sums at auction. The lot in question comprised three greyhounds and a whippet, together with a Sylvac greyhound and had been estimated at a realistic level, so eyebrows were certainly raised when, following some spirited bidding, the gavel fell at £2,200.
Elsewhere in the sale, it was gold that sent pulses racing. A very stylish 1970s Omega – lady’s 18ct gold bracelet watch, clocked up the day’s second highest price selling for £1,300 whilst a similar bracelet watch but this time by Roamer sold for £880. An 18ct yellow gold fancy link chain, of twisted baton and belcher link sections, also performed well, selling for £910 and a 9ct rose gold curb link chain, weighing in at 40g sold for £750.
One of the day’s biggest surprises came in the form of a group of 20th century mostly wooden dolls house furniture. With very few watchers and no commission bids in the lead up to the sale, it certainly kept its potential quiet and no one could have predicted the estimate busting sum of £750 which it went on to achieve. Also racing past its estimate, a children's painted wooden rocking horse, with carved nose and mouth detail attributed to Ayre sold for £680.
Clevedon Salerooms next Interiors sale will be on Thursday October 24th. The next Quarterly Fine Art sale, for which entries are now invited, will be on December 5th commencing at 10.30.
